Hitchhiking for women!

In case you want to hitchhike but you are afraid, because you are a woman and alone in this trip, this is the article for you!

We know hitchhiking can be a problem and especially for women. Statistically speaking even in normal situation women are predisposed to being harassed or are prone to being violated by any gender.
Let’s not talk about the gender norms. Considering that a woman needs to “behave” in social society norms, of course that a woman traveling alone would be considered a call for “she asked for it”. Depending on the country or the place, most places are considered dangerous for women to be travelling alone.
There are dozens of cases of women being kidnapped or trafficked or killed, but also there are articles of woman journals and blogs sharing their experience of traveling alone around the world.

This doesn’t have to scare or lock us up in our rooms, but we should prepare and be ready for anything that comes our way, if we choose to travel and hitchhike alone.

So here are some things, that we women can do to prevent an unpleasant trip, or an assault.

Communicate!

Always initiate a conversation with your driver. Why?
The more you know about them, the more they’ll hesitate to do something to you. It’s a human instinct to try to maintain the status they created for themselves. Also, you can learn a lot about a person based on it’s conversation and you can understand clearly if they want anything more from you. So one thing is, try to learn the local language in case, you drive with a person that you can not communicate in English with.

Show them some pictures or ur blogs!

It’s always a good idea to show people that you know what you are doing, that you’ve done this before and that people are aware of your whereabouts and what you do. Also always text someone about your location. It’s always better to be safe than sorry for yourself.

Try to be cheerful and sure!

If you stay confident and sure about what you are doing, speaking and staying, the chances are that you are going to look intimidating and that is a good thing for you. Speak your mind and be confident!

Do not tell people that you are broke!

If you get lucky a lot of people might offer you free food or even money, but do never say you don’t have some yourself. If boys can get away with this easily, girls are almost always prone to: “Do you want to “earn” some money?” They almost every time are going to ask you about something sexual. Or they might treat you differently after you tell them that you are broke. How?
Let’s see. They might think that if you go missing or you get rapped, you can not actually do anything serious about it, since you can not afford transport, let it be some lawyers. But if you tell them you are a serious academic researcher or you are traveling for work, things might take a different turn!

Trust your instincts and trust yourself.
Be carefull and enjoy your adventures!
