Do's and Don'ts when HitchHiking!

HitchHiking goes back to anciet times. People used to do it and still do to this day.
So here are some of the basic rules, so that you can try it too.

Of course that hitchhiking can turn out to be scary especially for people who are trying it for the first time. There are many reasons why we try hitchhiking. Could be that we are stuck in a place with no money and we really need to move, or it could be that we want to try a new adventure.
It really doesn’t matter the reason why, but what matters is what you should and should not do when you are hitchhiking.

Based on my experience but also after I’ve did some intense research, I’ll try to summarize this one for you.

THE DON'TS

-Look dirty

I don’t think I need to detail this enough, but the cleaner and shaved you look, more people find you less dangerous and that increases you’re chances of getting picked up.

-Try not to bring pets

Even though you might feel safer with a dog or a cat accompanying you along the way, a lot of people might not want to bring a pet into their cars

-Don’t over pack

People might have little space in their cars, and if you bring a lot of stuff, that decreases the chances of getting a ride, even if the driver stops and tries to take you.

- Don't hitchhike at nightime

Try to sleep at night, and not try hitchhiking. That’s mostly because, a lot of drivers are not going to see you anyways, and that increases the risk of you actually being hit by a car. And also, there are a lot of dangerous people driving up at night, so I would not recommend it.

Do not get disappointed if you are waiting long hours in the motorway. That is part of the fun, and sometimes when you least expect it, that’s when miracles tend to happen.

DO'S

-Go at the exit of the city

. It logically means that they are going out of the city, and that will save you some short rides and stops.

- Bring water

And lots of food. You will never know how long you are going to stay out.

-Dress accordingly to the weather

You will never know how long you are going to stay on the roads, so it's always a good idea to dress up accordingly to the weather. Ask the locals or try to do some research before deciding to take the road.

-Bring a map

What if your smarphone dies and you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and don't now where the road is taking you? That's why you need a map, to know where you are going, or where to stop and take a rest or hitchhike.

- You can choose who you drive with

Try to be very direct with your driver about your destination, of course without sounding impolite. Sometimes you might drive with horrible drivers. Trust your instincts when it comes to picking up a drive.
If you’re sensing that this person is a dangerous person, then he/she probably is. So don’t be afraid and decline.

Most important, don’t forget to have fun. Try to enjoy every little moment by simply being yourself. Trust yourself and your journey.
I hope hitchhiking never stops, since it is the most beautiful and humane transport and adventure to exist!
