Welcome to the group.
What I would recommend for you to do, is try fuel pit stops out of the city. And try to hitchhike with truck drivers mostly.
Due to Michigan strict forbidden rules to not get hitchhikers because of a few prisons that are there (people might think that you are a convict) people will probably avoid you. Basically, I think gas stations are the best place to pick up long rides.
Also try to avoid short and frequent stopping, police might cause problems.
In general, it’s not a bad place to hithchhike.
